New Training Requirement:

All personnel named in an existing or new “Application for Approval of Research with Human Subjects” (whether submitted to a Unit Review Committee or the Full Board) must complete a web-based tutorial on the protection of human subjects. Although the training represents compliance with the University’s Federal-wide Assurance on the Protection of Human Subjects, the Board views the tutorial as more than a regulatory requirement.  The University of Maine acknowledges and accepts responsibility for protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects of research.  The tutorial presents common concepts, principles, and issues related to protection of human participants, and it also covers the University’s Policies and Procedures for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research.  Completing the tutorial will help investigators identify research activities that involve human participants, and help understand how to protect the rights and welfare of all human participants involved in research.

The tutorial will take approximately 60-90 minutes to complete and is a one-time requirement at this time.  There is a quiz at the end that must be completed and submitted on-line.  IRB members and Unit Review Committee members are also required to complete the tutorial.
